Why not just paint over them?
Black-out paint wears away under traffic and the old lines show through, sometimes making two conflicting layouts visible at once. In warehouses, that can mean a walkway that looks like it goes somewhere it doesn't. Proper removal takes the old marking off the surface.
Removal methods
- Grinding: mechanical removal, common on concrete and asphalt
- Blasting: shot or water blasting for tougher materials and larger areas
- Chemical removal: for some coatings, where grinding would damage the surface
The right method depends on the surface and the material being removed. Removal can leave a visible scar, which is why it's best done before a new layout, not after.
